Glass Table Tops

Annealed, or float glass, is typically used for protection of your table in a ¼" thickness. As an industry standard, it is a non-safety glass and is stocked here in Hawaii. We normally recommend clear glass to show the beauty of your wood, but other colors and patterns are also available - grey, greylite #14 ( a dark grey), bronze, acid (a sandblasted look), azurlite (an evergreen) and arctic blue are a just a few of our selections.

When you first cut glass, you can cut your fingers on the edges and that is called "clean cut." Once we sand the edges for an additional charge, it becomes "seamed", so that it will be safe but the edges are a little bumpy. This edgework is suitable for glass that is inserted into furniture or in use in rattan pieces that are so popular here in Hawaii. "Polished" glass happens when we send your piece through a polishing machine and the edge is as smooth as the top itself.

If you require glass to BE your table, then we'll use a minimum of three eighths thickness of glass, and up to a thickness of three quarters of an inch. Or, we may suggest tempered glass.

TEMPERED GLASS
Tempered glass is a glass that has been processed by a controlled thermal treatment. It has increased strength compared with float glass and will usually shatter into small fragments, rather than sharp shards, when broken. It is a safety glass and is typically 5 times stronger than annealed glass. However, due to the baking process, it cannot be cut nor can it be altered (i.e., holes drilled) once it is manufactured.

Typically, tempered glass is used in shower door applications and for high-traffic volume use. Unfortunately, there is not enough volume in Hawaii for tempered glass so there is no manufacturing facility here. We can, however, quote you for a piece to be brought in from the Mainland at extremely competitive rates.

CUSTOM GLASS FABRICATION
In Hawaii, we are limited to clean cut, flat polished, mitered, and ground edges for glass. We can get beveled glass from the Mainland, and that process takes 30 days. Beveled glass is when the plane of the glass drops off the edge at a 45 degree angle, and we can do beveling in ½", ¾", 1", and 1 ½" sizes. A

Our experienced glaziers can cut for you straight lines, as well as to hand cut diameters, ovals, patterns, and drill holes. We can also do that difficult corner notch, or hexagon shape that you may need as well.
